Oktoberfest Over - Contest Over

So October is over, and that means the Quitting The Day Job October contest is over as well.  While the contest did not bring as many linkbacks and subscribers as we wanted, I would rate the contest a success nonetheless.  Ok, so here we go with the results.

Thanks to all the blogs that linked to us:

Ok, so now, totaling up all the comments, adding in the blogs that linked to us, and picking a random number at Random.org …  The winner is:

Mark

Congrats to Mark, an email has been sent your way for your Paypal address. Thanks to everyone who participated, and look for another contest starting around Mid November. This time the top prize will be over $100.

Be a team player! (Even if your team sucks)

Desk Coder reminded me of another frustrating situation at work.  One that yet again proves that people in the managerial positions above us have no clue.

Recently during one of our application code review meetings, a new standard was presented as going into production.  No discussion, no vetting, no nothing.  The Database Admin and newly hired programmer took it upon themselves to develop this and force it on everyone.  They showed the code and….

What work appeals to you?

48 Days to Creative Income, Day 13

Day #12: Which of the 10 models of work appeals to you?

Blech!  Sickness has sidelined Desk Coder and CubeWarrior for most of the last week.  True sickness, not job sickness.  That is always present.

48 Days lays out 10 categories of work.  Funny because they call them “new work models”, as in new economy.  But it’s funny because once again showing how much has changed in the last few [...] Continue Reading…

Reasons We Want To Quit

New category here, thought we’d share with you our own personal day job “experiences” that help reinforce the reasons that Desk Coder and I want to quit our day jobs.  Hey, blogging is suppose to be therapeutic isn’t it (ok maybe not, but it’s cheaper than actual therapy)?

But you don’t just want to read about us….share your experiences with us….

My wife works for a Human Resources Consulting company.  They send out frequent newsletters [...] Continue Reading…

Weekend Links - October 25, 2008

Since I have been busy working on my websites and toward becoming my own business (going to file the papers to become an LLC next week), I figure I would send some links to what I have found interesting while surfing the net.  A lot of these links contain value information too good to pass up.

Automate, Automate, Automate

I have mentioned before that Desk Coder and I are IT professionals.  Or used to be until the corporate world turned us into mindless drone monkeys.

So it was natural that our attempts to make extra income in order to quit the day job by working from a technology angle.  The Internet has really opened up the opportunities for doing this.  In times past you would have had to write programs, the market them, then [...] Continue Reading…

25% Done

After completing 12 days of the 48 Days to Creative Income I am:

Fatter, haven’t lost any weight.  I think I’ve gained it!!!!  Damn waistline.
Poorer, since my investment account statements have come in.
More depressed than ever.

So far the first 48 Days have not been profitable in a monetary sense at all.  No money is coming in.  Lots of money going out.

Not profitable in the idea sense either.  The 48 Days to Creative Income program, although [...] Continue Reading…

Income Options

48 Days to Creative Income, Day 12

Day #12: Which income option have you been using?

Not much of a discussion point but 48 Days basically lists out the 3 models of income generation and asks in which have you been using?

Option #1:  Traditional Job, Guaranteed Income, Guaranteed Benefits, etc.

This options should be painfully familiar.  It’s the Day Job.  It’s a clear exchange of Time and Effort in exchange for a paycheck.  How do you improve [...] Continue Reading…

What Comes First - Product or Niche?

Let’s go head first into Affiliate Marketing!  The majority of people who make money from the Internet do it by Affiliate Marketing.  You can make a living by doing AM, if you know what you are doing.  I know, I know, quit blowing smoke up for butts.  Let’s start …  So where do we start?

A lot of people say choosing a niche is the first thing you should do.  The diet niche makes money, [...] Continue Reading…

Time and Effort vs. Results Based Economy

48 Days to Creative Income, Day 11

Day #11: DiscussTime and Effort vs. Results Based Economy with someone you trust.

First off, I took a bit of time off!  I had intended to try to complete the 48 days within..well..48 days.  My practical goal, knowing that this time of year lends itself to a lot of other non-work related issues, was to complete it within the next 60 days.

But on Wed I watched the presidential debate, [...] Continue Reading…
