10 Reasons You’re Not Rich
Heading over to check my Fantasy Football team on Yahoo, I saw an article called 10 Reasons You’re Not Rich. Intrigued, I read the article. Here is why I am not rich yet:
- You care what your car looks like - Ummm, no. I drive the smallest 4-door car I could find, and my wife drives a minivan that we got a REAL good deal on. Strike 1.
- You feel entitlement - Basically it means you borrow a lot of money to pay for a lifestyle you can’t afford. Ok, so ya, I do this. I am working on paying off the debt, but it is a slow road. When my internet income picks up, the debt will decrease.
- You lack diversification - Invest portfolio? What is that? All I have is a 401K and a savings account. When I can afford to invest money, I will diversify, but #2 is standing in the way.
- You started too late - Ummm, maybe. But what 18-22 year old has a savings or retirement account. I am only a few years out of college and have a nice 401K built up so far.
- You don’t do what you enjoy - Bingo! From 9 to 5, I don’t. But my internet business is what I absolutely love. 2 weeks and I start looking for a new job.
- You don’t like to learn - WRONG! I am one of the 20% of software developers who actually reads books and expands their discipline. I love to read books, blogs, or just research on the internet.
- You buy things you don’t use - I don’t, but the wife loves to. She buys things for $30 and sells it for $5 and is happy with herself.
- You don’t understand value - When it comes to groceries, the wife and I have been doing this. Why pay so much for name brand when the Wal-mart is the same thing, but cheaper. I have a tough time with this when it comes to other things. I bought the cheapest desk I could find for $30. Nice, but nothing like I want or need. I just wasted $30.
- Your house is too big - WRONG! My house is too small, and it hinders my internet business work. I don’t have an office, so I have to sit in the living room where all the distractions are.
- You fail to take advantage of opportunities - We all do this. But hindsight is 20/20 my friend.
Not a bad article for Yahoo, considering they usually have regurgitated crap. I didn’t learn anything new, but it kind of puts into perspective why I am living the way I am. And it works as sort of a checklist to pave the way for you to quit your day job. You need to take care of all 10 before you will be in a position to quit your day job. Either that, or just make a boat load of money!

Hmmm let me try….
1. You care what your car looks like - Well my commuter is 11 years old, only reason we have a “newer” car is cause the wife was embarrassed about me driving our other one.
2. You feel entitlement - Nope.
3. You lack diversification - Nope.
4. You started too late - No.
5. You don’t do what you enjoy - Hahaha…no, not anymore. Use to be interesting….now it’s a drag.
6. You don’t like to learn - I like to learn, I don’t like to be forced to learn. I also don’t like to learn stuff I will never use or be allowed to use.
7. You buy things you don’t use - eh sometimes, but these are not big ticket items. Usually it’s a piece of computer hardware or software.
8. You don’t understand value - Yes I do. But I also understand quality. So, when I was younger I went for cheapest. Wife went for extreme, you always bought the very best no matter the cost. We’ve now met in the middle.
9. Your house is too big - I’d say no, but my heating and electric bills are saying YES. My house “looks” big, but it’s really not. But inside the finished basement ads tons of room.
10. You fail to take advantage of opportunities - Yes I do.

This set of straightforward reasons sends the message home. One can quickly assess whether they are on the the right track or if they are lacking in a key item, and if it is holding them back.
