Automate, Automate, Automate
I have mentioned before that Desk Coder and I are IT professionals. Or used to be until the corporate world turned us into mindless drone monkeys.
So it was natural that our attempts to make extra income in order to quit the day job by working from a technology angle. The Internet has really opened up the opportunities for doing this. In times past you would have had to write programs, the market them, then support them, blah blah. Sure you could have made money, but the maintenance hassle and all weren’t for me.
Luckily the internet has opened the door to so many online money making schemes opportunities that you don’t have to follow the traditional “coding path” to make some side money. But having a technical background does really help in setting up Internet based mechanisms.
But something that Desk Coder and I have been discussing lately is the need to make our sites and money making more “automatic”. Sure you can start a blog, post entries every day, throw on some adsense, promote, maybe do some affiliate deals….HEY it’s midnight already?!?!?! ( You will spend a lot of time doing this).
One of our year end goals is to work at doing less “interactive work” on the sites and making them more automatic and self running. Desk Coder is hard at work on two sites, that if done right, he will barely have to touch during a work week. I have 2 sites that require only an hour each per month. Another site takes just 2 hours a week. But together and separately we have several sites that just require too much hands on work.
If you are like us, you are lazy. The great thing about the web is that it is up and running 24/7. So we need to work on sites that update frequently or…don’t update at all, but will not require our constant attention.
If you are looking into a web venture, concentrate some of your effort on making administration of your site an almost automatic affair. This will free you up to enjoy the fruits of your (minimized) labors.
