Be a team player! (Even if your team sucks)

Desk Coder reminded me of another frustrating situation at work.  One that yet again proves that people in the managerial positions above us have no clue.

Recently during one of our application code review meetings, a new standard was presented as going into production.  No discussion, no vetting, no nothing.  The Database Admin and newly hired programmer took it upon themselves to develop this and force it on everyone.  They showed the code and….

I immediately challenged it.  I personally don’t care what they wanted to do, they were building an over complicated mechanism.  An unnecessary one at that.  I called it into question and forced the issue.  Because it was a) wrong of these two to do this on their own and b) complicated and a round about way of doing something.

Later the Manager of Desk Coder and the programmer called his team into his office (the programmer was out that day…on the day his new standard went in…yes…).  He immediately jumped on Desk Coder and the other team member: “WE HAVE TO SUPPORT OUR TEAM!  WE HAVE TO BACK EACH OTHER UP!  WE HAVE TO BE BEHIND EACH OTHER!!!!”

Basically what he was saying was “even if it was wrong I expect you to support it.”

True story.
