Don’t Be That Guy
In attempting to make your blog more popular, one tried and true method is to comment on other blogs in your niche. It is an excellent way to increase readers and backlinks to your blog, if you do it correctly. There are plenty of different ways to comment on other blogs, but when done effectively and correctly, you maximize the benefits from comments.
In order to help you write better comments, let me tell you how not to comment:
- Don’t be the “Great Post” guy. I never approve these comments, in fact, if I see them, I delete them. You could not show any less creativity than just commenting by telling the author what a great writer they are. If you don’t have ANYTHING at all to say, don’t say it. I know it was a great post, I wrote it. Everything I do is golden
- Don’t be like a stalker. If you look at the Top Commentator plugin, and your comment count is more than double the person below you, then you are a stalker. If you HAVE to be the first to comment on a post on a blog, then you are a stalker. If you comment more than once, and the comments are not in reply to any one else’s comments, then you are a stalker. Get the point here?
- Don’t be the guy who always points out mistakes in comments. If you see something wrong with a post, like spelling or grammar issues, don’t comment about it. Email the author and tell him. Try not to come off as the guy who is always telling every one what they do wrong.
- Don’t be the guy with the signature in your blog comments. Whether it is a link, or just your name, don’t do it. You include your name and link when you comment, you don’t need to use it again at the end of your comment. You come off as just looking for links, and to me, you look like an idiot who does not realize you just posted it twice. There is no need for it, so don’t do it.
Stay away from being one of these guys, and you should reap the rewards of comments on other blogs in your niche. Remember, Don’t Be That Guy.
