How Other Bloggers Engage Me

How do you as a blogger engage readers? The easiest way to answer this question is to figure out how other bloggers engage you.  If you want to turn visitors into readers, you need to think about what turns you from a visitor of a blog into a reader.  You need to think about what turns you from a one-time visitor into a repeat visitor.  What about that blog or site makes you want to come back?  What about that blog’s author makes you want to come back?

Here are some of the things that blog authors do to engage me:

  • When I come to your site, at least proofread your posts.  When I come to a site that has spelling and grammatical errors, it is a major turn off.  If you take the time as an author to proofread your posts before I read them, it shows you care about the quality of your content.
  • Writing fresh content keeps all readers coming back.  I prefer to see about 5 posts a week.  Saturday and Sunday, most people are too busy to read blogs and surf the Internet, but during the week, have a new post ready for your readers to read.
  • If I leave a comment on your blog, replying to my comment goes a long way.  If you reply to a comment that was left after mine, but don’t reply to mine, it makes me you don’t care about me.
  • If I leave a comment on your blog, the least you can do is visit my blog.  I can’t stand when I comment on a blog, and see ZERO visitors.  I came to your site, read your posts, and took the time to comment.  Would visiting my site be that much of a waste of your time?  If you don’t have time to at least check out my blog, why should I come back to yours?
  • The best posts, in my opinion, are the ones that pose questions or actions at the end.  If you write just to hear yourself speak (so to say), then why should I read your blog?  If you are writing without the including the reader in some way, then they will read your post and leave.  No comments, no bouncing around your site.  Ok, I read your post, I got nothing out of it.  Bye!  If you want readers, you need to give them information or ask them questions … engage them!

These are just a few ways you can engage your readers better.  There are a ton of different ways to do it, but I thought that listing the way bloggers engage me would make you create a list of your own.  So, create a list, then start getting to work.

Good advice. I’m hoping I’m following most of it. Although I do have a horrible habit of not proof reading my posts before hand.Must try harder with that one!

I usually let Firefox catch my spelling mistakes, but sometimes FF just doesn’t spell check. I found switching from the Visual tab to the HTML tab and back restarts the spell checker (or whatever), but my first couple of posts had a bunch of spelling mistakes.

I completely agree with the point where you’ve mentioned that if someone takes time to leave a comment on your blog then you should go and visit that blog and leave a comment too, or if you’ve got zero knowledge about the topic then a simple thank you mail will always do good.

Wonderful post.

Exactly. If you want to market your blog, it should be all about the readers. So when they spend time on your blog, you should spend time on theirs.

Give a little, get a little.

It’s a very good point about learning from your reading experience - though bearing in mind that all readers have different preferences!

I do try and visit the sites of people who comment for the first time, but have to confess I no longer have time to leave a return comment on their site. I do reply to all comments on my own blog though, and find bloggers who don’t reply very unengaging!
