Redefining the Purpose of Your Website

During my Build a Better Site series, I have describing how to build a website from the ground up.  The information is very valuable when starting up a new website, but what about the websites you already have?  I have been in the process of redesigning my Freebie website the past week or so.  The site is already up, and has some decent groundwork already laid, but where do I start?

While I was listening to a podcast the other day, the podcaster mentioned something about redefining the purpose of your life.  As bad as this sounds, the first thing I thought of redefining the purpose of your websites.  Not sure what this says about me personally …  When you first created your website, did you have a purpose?  What was?  Is it still valid today?

If you answered Yes to all these questions, great, your almost done.  The final question is, can you change your purpose to bring in more traffic or more money?  That what it is about right?  There are some sites I build for myself and my family, but all the other sites I build, I want traffic and to make money.  I want to see traffic out of this blog.  I don’t want to talk to myself all the time.  My niche blogs I build to make money.  That is a part of their purpose.  Can I change the purpose to increase my traffic and money, probably.

If you answered No to these questions, go back and define the purpose of your website.  It may be you are veering too far from the path, and that is why it is not succeeding as it should.  Blogs are great examples.  Make sure what you write is in tune with your purpose.  If your blog is about finance and half your posts have nothing to do with finance, there is a problem.  Define the purpose, and stick to it.  Your websites will thank you.

Yup. It is important to stay focused on the topic if we’re doing any niche websites. But we’re all are just human and tend to get distracted easily. That happened to me too but I would actually get the whole site on track by deleting unnecessary articles and put something else that is relevant to the website’s purpose on it. :)
